Women in Media (WIM Ballybunion) is a weekend celebration of the success of women in the field of media.
Every year in the month of April powerful women in politics and media convene in the north Kerry town of Ballybunion for the annual Women in Media conference.
Women in Media is an annual celebration of the most influential women working in the public eye is set to take place at the fourth Women in Media event at Kilcooly’s Country House Hotel, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.
It is the only event of its kind in Ireland, Women in Media aims to provide a forum for women to come together to discuss the achievements and challenges of women working in the media, sport, political and related industries.
Research was found by global consultancy firm McKinsey, showing that women occupy up less than 30% of top executive roles in the media and telecom industry. This is unfortunately the norm across multiple industry sectors, where women in the workplace continue to be seriously underrepresented in senior and leadership roles.
“Women in Media creates the unique opportunity for like minded women and indeed men to discuss the challenges and issues facing women working in male-dominated industries and the media industry as a whole. All while enjoying the beautiful countryside location of Ballybunion. We have continued to grow year on year, and have been overwhelmed by the response and willingness of Ireland’s top journalists to share their wisdom and encourage the next generation of Irish talent.
I am delighted that we have been able to expand our offering this year to include not only symposiums and discussions on media but also sport, literature and politics, we truly believe we have something for everyone. We have carefully chosen topics that have impacted all our lives in some way, from recent events such as the influence of social media on the general elections to those from our past, including stories of Irish women who fought during 1916."
The Women in Media event specifically acknowledges the lifetime achievements of two ladies with strong links to Ballybunion; the late Mary Cummins, Irish Times journalist and Seanad Eireann reporter and the late Maeve Binchy, international successful novelist, who spent most of her teenage summers in Ballybunion.
Mary Cummins is the lady who inspired the concept of the Women in Media event. It is therefore fitting that each year we present our award to our chosen Woman in Media in her name and in honour of her memory.
She was born in Castletownshend, Co Cork on the 19th November in the mid to late 1940’s. She thought it rude and irrelevant to mention the actual year of birth. Her father William Cummins was a sergeant in the Garda Siochana, who came from Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry. Her mother came from Adrigole in West Cork
