Legend has it, the goddess Venus was carried to Earth on the shell of a scallop, Heaven, otherwise known as Valentia Island, is home to the totally unique and fabulously original King Scallop Festival.
On the waterfront in Knightstown, the island’s capital, you can enjoy the party atmosphere around the craft and food stalls, and watch demonstrations of just how many ways you can cook a scallop. However, the highlight has to be a cook-off among the island’s men to see who will win the hotly contested Mr King Scallop title.
On Saturday and Sunday The Valentia Island King Scallop Festival is celebrated and you will see scallop fans flock to Knightstown waterfront on the island of the southwest coast of Kerry.
Valentia Island is home to over 600 permanent residents who came up with the idea of The King Scallop Festival to bring more visitors to their island in the summer months.
The community work together to provide two days of scallop-related entertainment. With the haul of scallops, there’ll be cooking demonstrations and tastings with local chefs and visiting chefs.
Locals compete in a scallop cook-off with an ultimate winner crowned as Mr King Scallop. There are non-shellfish activities to partake in as well including a craft and food fair, a children’s duathalon and live music from Hermitage Green.
The Valentia Island Kind Scallop Festival promises visitors scrumptious food and beautiful, secluded scenery. Entertainment will include live music, fishing, annual blessing of the boats and sports competitions.
A number of family oriented events will take place such as face painting, scallop-shell painting and a kid's triathlon. Of course, there will be plenty of stalls offering freshly cooked scallops for you to sample with the highlight of the festival being the crowing of Mr. King Scallop on Sunday evening.
This competition aims to find the most talented scallop chef in Valentia. Valentia Island is a small island ensuring an intimate and relaxing event.
