Cappanalea is a Public Outdoor Education Centre (OEC) run under the auspices of Kerry Education and Training Board. The Centre focuses on personal development through the medium of adventure sports.

The highly qualified instructors offer programmes which include the full range of adventure sports and field study activities. All of their programmes make students aware of and develop their often hidden talents and skills. 



Cappanalea also teach about team building and focus on how an individual can make their contribution to the effectiveness of a team. In their programmes they use adventure education and outdoor / wilderness experiences to enhance the learning outcomes.

Cappanalea OEC is within easy reach of all major towns in Kerry, particularly Tralee and Killarney which are served with the national rail network.

Kerry International Airport in Farranfore is within close proximity to the Centre and caters for both national and international visitors.

The nearest town to Cappanalea is Killorglin which is eleven kilometres away. 

Cappanalea has one of the largest Canadian canoe fleets in the country and they use it to bring students on a number of courses throughout Kerry.

Starting off gently on the lakes of Kerry they can bring people on many tours around the county. The lakes of Killarney especially provide some beautiful paddling as well as the possibility of seeing the recently re-introduced Sea-Eagles up close.

Moving onto rivers they instruct people on how to handle their open canoes in flowing water. The qualified instructors at Cappanalea OEC teach the necessary skills to canoe safely on grade 3 rapids on the rivers Laune, Lower Flesk and the Lower Caragh.

Their canoes also offer a great platform for multi-day trips, camping in and around some truly wonderful places.

Canoe sailing is also an activity taught at the Centre.

To Learn To Sail or Just Sharpen Your Sailing Skills
if you have already dipped your toe in the water and would like to improve your skills or you are a complete beginner Cappanalea OEC is the place for you.

They provide courses during June, July and August for adults and youths. Sailing courses are run on weekday evenings or weekends for adults and on Mondays to Fridays for youths. If these months or times are not suitable, other courses can be arranged for groups of six or more people

Windsurfing is one of the fastest sail sports there is. At Cappanalea OEC you can learn the basic skills. The easy to use Hi-fly motion boards are ideal to enable all students get going on their very first lesson.

Windsurfing as an activity is built into all their multi activity weekends for adults and into their summer programmes for children. Individuals can join in on any of our windsurfing day course at the Centre.

Cappanalea OEC is surrounded by some of the best white-water and flat-water paddling in all of Ireland. With the beautiful lakes of Killarney nearby and the exciting Glencar Rivers almost outside our back door, we can provide a challenge for all.

The qualified instructors are renowned paddlers and some are members of the national training and assessment.

Cappanalea OEC is uniquely located to offer a wide range of mountaineering challenges and adventures. Whether you wish to be guided along beautiful sections of the Kerry way or challenged on scrambling routes up Corrán Tuathail, their qualified staff will cater for your needs.
