Kenmare is one of the focal points of the lace-making world as enthusiasts of this delicate art gather to take part in the Kenmare Lace Festival.
There were workshops, competitions, lectures, exhibitions and fashion shows, not to mention the lace-bedecked windows of the shops and restaurants all over town.
Kenmare Lace Festival is a fantastic weekend packed full of fashion, friendliness, art and most importantly lace making! There is something for everyone with lace making and millinery workshops, competitions, fashion show, social tables & more.
The exhibition of traditional heritage lace draws expressions of awe and wonder from the many visitors as they examine the minute details of the delicate lace, a lot of which was made in Kenmare by the Poor Clare nuns, who practiced and taught lace-making in the local convent since the 1860s.
Lace making workshops will be held for adults and children in Kenmare Lace, Limerick Lace, Carrickmacross Lace, Traditional Crochet, Bobbin Lace and Tatting.
There will be several exhibitions displaying both professional pieces of lace and textile student competition entries.
Lovers of lace literature can check out the lace library; make new friends, stitch and enjoy a cup of tea at the social tables dotted around the town; and don't miss the high class fashion show at the Park Hotel Kenmare!
If antique lace and history is your area of interest, come and visit the Heritage Lace Experience at the Kenmare Heritage Centre, or bring your own pieces to be identified at the 'Pinpoint your Lace' event on Sunday morning.
