Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2017
Saturday 1st July 2017
The event, now in it’s 33rd year, is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster, attracting thousands of leisure cyclists who will experience a fun and rewarding day’s cycling, completing 112 miles of the spectacular Ring of Kerry, while at the same time fundraising for worthy Kerry based Charities.
To date the Ring of Kerry Cycle has raised over €6.9 million for Kerry Charities and to support this massive fundraising initiative the Radio Kerry Community Fund, a fund that was set up by Radio Kerry to raise money for Kerry Community and Charity projects, has come on board as event sponsor.
Everyone must register at New Street on Friday evening the 3rd July to collect your bike tag.
Please cycle showing due care and consideration. Think of other road users including those in cars/buses. Some road closures will be in place but some sections will have no restrictions whatsoever. You should always expect local traffic even in the closed sections. Obey the rules of the road and don’t do anything you wouldn’t do when driving a car.
This year we are very fortunate to have approximately 150 Experienced Cycling Club Members that have volunteered to cycle “The Ring” monitoring and helping to steward the event ‘in the saddle’, acting as Cycling Marshals. These Cycling Marshals will be clearly identifiable and highly visible and are volunteering their time to ensure safety for everyone on the road. Please obey these marshals as you would any ROK stewards or marshals.
A few things you need to do…
- Get the bike fixed.
- You will need a bottle and cage, a pump and spare tube/tools fitted, a decent spare set of cycling shorts and gear and a rain jacket.
- Ride in a group, it will stand to you on the day.
- Try an organised cycle, charity spin, club run.
- As there are only a few weeks to go, a few quiet weekends of early nights, decent food, no booze, fresh air and training wouldn’t hurt. No honest!
Registration for the cycle can be done online

Fourth Of July Celebration Killarney
Tuesday 4th July 2017
Join in the celebration in Killarney on July 4th of July as they celebrate Independence Day; honouring our American Friends & Associates.
KILLARNEY’S Main Street will be transformed into a veritable Main Street USA as the town prepares to host its Fourth of July celebrations.
Onlookers should be prepared to be dazzled by the biggest and most eye-catching street parade ever witnessed in the town as Killarney turns red, white and blue to honour and celebrate its American friends and associates.
For years, Killarney has had the good fortune to be a destination hub for many American visitors and the town felt it was high time that it acknowledged their support and celebrate the many links and heritage that exist between Killarney and the USA.
The day of celebration will commence at 7am with a dawn chorus of the Star-Spangled Banner and the ceremonial hoisting of the American flag over the town hall.
The main event will be a celebration parade planned to commence at 8pm. There will be a celebration charity barbecue on Scott Street at 2pm.
A Wild West troupe will roam the streets of Killarney turning the town into the Dodge City of the south west with bank raids, shootouts and a competition to find the kid with the fastest draw in the west – or south west in this case.
Brass bands and can-can girls will perform on the streets together with other street entertainment throughout the day and the celebration parade will be followed by a feast of American swing music in the car park on Beech Road.
In true Fourth of July fashion, the evening will close with a spectacular fireworks display over the town.
The events will create a terrific atmosphere in Killarney on the evening before the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and will ensure that the town centre will be a hive of excitement, activity and family fun.
Come out and enjoy this spectacle, young, old, American Irish, Irish American, locals, visitors, everyone who wants to revel and party on the streets of Killarney. This is a celebration of all things American so wear your colours, bring your flags and join the people of Killarney in showing appreciation for our American visitors.
Business owners are encouraged to participate in the celebration and decorate their premises accordingly. This Will Be A Spectacle Not To Be Missed. Brandon Half Marathon
Saturday 8th July 2017
IRELAND'S ONLY ALL BEACH HALF MARATHON / 10K
Saturday 8th July 2016
Are you up for the challenge??
This unique event will once again be Ireland's (and possibly the world's!!) ONLY half marathon & 10k event entirely based on a beach! The event is being run on the beach around the beautiful Brandon Bay and is being organised for Saturday 16th July in conjunction with the Castlegregory Summer festival 2016. Last years inaugural event was a brilliant days running on the beach so, if you want to be part of this unique & challenging event, mark July 2016 on your calendar for The Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k run.
So, what exactly is The Brandon Bay Half marathon & 10k event? This is a half marathon and 10k event which is run entirely on the golden sandy beach that stretches around Brandon Bay in the Kingdom of Kerry all the way from Fahamore in the Maharees, to Fermoyle point under Mt Brandon itself.
The event starts and finishes at Fahamore in the Maharees and competitors doing the half marathon effectively run from one point of the 7 mile beach to the other and back on an 'out and back' course (Fahamore - Fermoyle - Fahamore). The event is being organised and run by Castlegregory Celtic F.C. & Castlegregory Community council and is a non-profit event and is the only running event in Ireland ENTIRELY run on the beach!! What a challenge!
Event date & start times:
The Brandon Bay Half marathon & 10k run will be run as part of the Castlegregory Summer Festival 2016 which will run July 7th - 10th with The Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k event taking place on Saturday 16th.
The event is once again being organised by
Castlegregory Celtic Fc & Castlegregory Community Council. (Please note that all proceeds go the
community projects and nominated charities. - These are non-profit events
organised for your enjoyment).
marathon: 9:00am / 10k run: 10:00am
This year on suggestion from last years participants we will be staggering the start times for each event which will generate a great atmosphere around the end line as all participants will be arriving back together. There will be water, fruit and hot soup for all at the end of the race, perfect after such a challenge
This event can be run, jogged or walked & starts and finishes at Fahamore
in the Maharees for both the half marathon and the 10k. Please note, the start
time of this event is based on tide times for obvious reasons.
Entry fee: Half Marathon : €35 / 10k run: €25 (incl timing chip, tech tee and medal!!)
We are absolutely delighted to have the services of www.actiontiming.ie for our event. Based in Wexford they have loads of experience and locals may recognoise them from other events in the area such as the Seven Frogs Triathlon. They were absolutely superb in timing our event last July.
Health & Safety:
There will be an ambulance service on site all during the event and we will be liaising with the safety officer to create a safe and well organised event. Please note the course is entirely on the beach so runners will possibly get wet as there are some small streams crossing the beach!
For local information and links to accommodation etc follow this link.http://www.castlegregorykerry.com/
Here is a video & map of our route for both the half marathon & 10k events. Also, the video was shot in winter and the debris visible on the beach is a result of winter storms and doesn't exist in summertime.

Féile Lúghnasa Festival
Friday 28th – Sunday 30th August 2017
Lúghnasa is a Celtic harvest festival that dates back 2,000 years. Revived in 1995, the Festival features music, children’s activities, stage dramas as well as many local traditions, including sheep shearing, a blessing of the boats at Brandon Pier, and a pilgrimage to the summit of Mount Brandon.
Activities throughout the four days feature a poker tournament, swimming races, fancy dress, sandcastle-building competition, kayaking, music by The High Kings, a stage drama that is created annually for the festival, several hill walks, and plenty of other activities to delight the whole family.
Central to Féile Lúghnasa is the pilgrimage to the summit of Mount Brandon. At 952 metres, it is the second highest mountain in Ireland and one of the finest hill walks in all of Ireland, featuring breathtaking views of the mountains and the sea.
The first farmers in the region celebrated Lúghnasa with a solemn cutting on the first corn and offering to the deity by burying it at the top of Mount Brandon. All would have then participated in a meal of the new food. The sacrifice of a sacred bull may have taken place followed by a feast of its flesh, some rite with the bulls hide, a ritual dance play and struggle for supremacy with victory symbolised by the installation of the stone head of Crom Dubh on Brandon’s summit and a ceremony of triumph over it by an actor chosen to represent Crom’s adversary, Lugh.
Pilgrims follow the well-trodden path from the grotto at Faha, angling upwards across the hill and passing Benagh Promontory Fort, above to the right. At the entrance to the Coom, the path becomes stonier with a steep drop to the left. Near the head of the valley, the river is crossed at the marked point, the path then winds between the highest lakes at the foot of the Esk, a steep section leading to the saddle.
It is here on clear days gives the most fantastic views of the magnificent coastal scenery on the western side of the mountain. From the saddle, pilgrims turn left at the top. The remains of an early Christian hermitage, attributed to St. Brendan, crown the summit.
