Ross Castle One Of The Finest Castles In Ireland.

Search County Kerry

Ross Castle is one of the finest examples of castle building in Ireland. The castle lies south west of Killarney, at the end of an unclassified road, which leads past the racecourse, and is known for it’s massive 15th century Keep. The Magnificent Ross Castle.

The stronghold is in excellent state of preservation and is considered one of the finest examples of castle building in Ireland.

It is sited on a long, wooded peninsula, which extends into the lake and was defended against a large Cromwellian force, under Ludlow by large Royalist troops under Lord Muskerry.

Ross Castle eventually surrendered after the introduction of floating batteries.

The Castle is a quay from which excursions can be taken onto The Lakes.

Past this the peninsula broadens out to form “Ross Island”, an almost triangular area of Island which partly encloses Ross Bay on it’s north side and is known for the strangely eroded rocks of its limestone shore.

On the West side of the town, is the vast Kenmare Estate. This was formerly owned by the Earls of Kenmare and is now the location of several luxury hotels, with a fine stretch of Lough Leane, and the magnificent Killarney Golf Club.
