Leave Killarney via the T29(N22) ‘Cork road, and in 2 miles bear left on to the T30 (N72) sign posted ‘Mallow, Rathmore’. Proceed with the Mangerton Mountains on the right, and in 5 more miles pass through Barraduff. Drive to Rathmore, in half a mile branch right on to the L41 SR ‘Millstreet’, and in a futher 7 miles you will reach reach Millstreet, right on the borders of County Cork.

On meeting the memorial, turn right, and immediately bear right on to the L41 sign posted ‘Cork, Macroom’. In 4miles turn sharp right on to an unclassified road sign posted ‘Ballyvourney’. Climb steadily through forestry plantations to the 1 ,340ft road summit, then descend through dense forest.

Drive for a further 2 miles and turn left sign posted ‘Ballyvourney’, and in another mile and a half meet a T-junction and turn left on to the T29(N22). Pass through Ballyvourney if you want to, however there is a great place to have a meal at “The Mills Inn.”

4 miles further on you will reach Ballymakeery. Turn right on to an unclassified road sign for ‘Ballingeary, Renaniree’, and shortly enter the Douglas River valley. In 2.5 miles turn left sign posted ‘Renaniree’, pass through rocky countryside, then in 1 mile meet a 1-junction and turn right. In 0.5 mile reach Renaniree and turn right.

Ascend gradually for 3 miles to a l,000ft summit and turn right sign-posted Kilgarvan, Kenmare’, Follow the mountain side to a 1,147ft summit and make a long, winding descent. Climb to a 1 ,055ft pass and continue down into the Roughty Valley. Cross Inchee Bridge and drive alongside the river for 2.5 miles to Morley’s Bridge. Turn right across the bridge, then left on to the L62. Proceed to Kilgarvan and follow sign-post ‘Kenmare’ through the village.

Continue down the Roughty Valley to reach Kenmare. Follow the road to ‘Killarney’ on the 165 (N7 1) to drive along the Finnihy River valley and ascend between low hills. Climb to the summit of an 860ft pass known as Moll’s Gap and bear right.

Descend into the Owenreagh Valley; after 1+mile pass the famous Gap of Dunloe — separating 2,739ft Purple and 2,503ft Shehy Mountains from the main part of the Macgillycuddy range — to the left. Beyond Looscaunagh Lough (On the right) pass Lady’s View viewpoint, which lies to the left.

Proceed through extensive woodland for several miles to the shores of Upper Lake, then pass the conical 1,1 O3ft Eagle’s Nest Mountain before skirting the base of 1 ,764ft Torc Mountain with Muckross Lake on the left. Shortly pass the entrance to magnificent Torc Waterfall on the right.

Continue through dense woodland, and after 1 m (from the waterfall) pass the entrance to Muckross House and Gardens on the left. In another half mile pass ruined Muckross Abbey (NM) on the left, and shortly catch sight of Laugh Leane. In 1.5 mile cross the Flesk, and after another .75 mile pass a left turn leading to ruined Ross Castle. Continue to Killarney town centre.
